Garage Door Repair in North Richland Hills, TX
Stuck, noisy, or just refusing to cooperate? We diagnose what's actually wrong before we touch anything, give you an honest quote, and fix it right the first time.
Most garage door calls we get fall into a handful of buckets: a spring let go, a cable frayed through, the rollers wore out, or the opener quit talking to the door. The fix is usually straightforward once somebody figures out which one it actually is. That diagnosis is the part people get wrong, and it is the part that costs them money when a company sells a whole new door for what was a $200 repair.
We start by putting the door in manual mode and lifting it by hand. A balanced door stops wherever you leave it. If it slams down or fights you on the way up, the problem is in the spring system and no amount of opener work will fix it. If it moves fine by hand but the opener struggles, we are looking at the opener, the sensors, or the travel settings instead.
You get the diagnosis and the number before we pick up a tool. If the honest answer is that your 22 year old door is not worth another repair, we will tell you that too, and we will not be offended if you want to think it over or call somebody else for a second number. Frankly, we would rather lose the job than talk you into a door you did not need. That is a lousy way to build a business in a town this size, where everybody's neighbor knows who did the work.
Signs you need garage door repair
- The door reverses partway down, or will not close at all
- You hear a bang from the garage and now the door will not lift
- The door lifts crooked, or one side hangs lower than the other
- Grinding, popping, or a noise loud enough to wake the house
- The opener runs its full cycle but the door does not move
Work out what is actually wrong before you call
Two minutes of checking will tell you more than any phone description, and it means the truck shows up with the right parts on it. The whole test rests on one idea: the springs carry the weight of the door, and the opener only guides it. So the first question is always whether the door is heavy.
Pull the red release cord hanging from the opener rail. That disconnects the motor and puts the door in manual mode. Now lift the door by hand, slowly, and watch what it does. Stop if anything feels like it wants to drop.
- Close the door fully, then pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener.
- Lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go carefully.
- A healthy door stays put. If it slams down or shoots up, the spring tension is off.
- If the door is too heavy to lift at all, a spring has almost certainly broken.
- If it lifts smoothly and stays where you leave it, the door is fine and the problem is the opener.
What the noise is telling you
Garage doors are honest about what hurts. Learn the four noises and you can diagnose most of this from the kitchen.
A rhythmic grinding or rumbling that follows the door the whole way up and back down is almost always rollers, because dry bearings complain continuously as they roll. A single bang, then a door that will not lift, is a spring. Nobody misidentifies that one. Every customer describes it the same way, as a gunshot in the garage, and half of them tell us they came downstairs expecting a break-in.
A clunk or catch at the same spot every single cycle is different. That is positional, so it is mechanical: a bent section of track, or a roller with a flat worn onto it coming around like a wheel out of true. Grinding from the motor head while the door sits perfectly still, especially with a scatter of plastic shavings underneath, is a stripped drive gear.
Then there is popping from the shaft above the door on a door that still works fine. That is usually just dry springs, and it is the one noise on this list that a bit of proper lubricant might genuinely fix.
When a repair stops being worth it
Repair wins most of the time, and it is not close. If the panels are straight and the frame is solid, keep the door. Springs, cables, rollers and openers are all wear items, and every one of them gets swapped on a working door without touching the door itself.
Replacement earns its keep in a much smaller set of cases. Panels cracked, rusted through, or dented past straightening, particularly across more than one section. A panel design the manufacturer discontinued, which starts getting common past about fifteen years and is pure luck of the draw. Or the arithmetic: a third repair on the same door inside two years is not bad luck, it is a door telling you something, and at that point we would rather say so than keep taking your money in $300 pieces.
We will give you the honest number both ways and let you decide. A repair we talk you into today that fails in four months is worse for us than the sale we did not make.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a garage door repair cost in the DFW area?
Most repairs in North Richland Hills land between $90 and $440 depending on the part. Roller replacement runs $90 to $200, cables $160 to $310, a matched pair of springs $220 to $440, off-track repair $200 to $380, and opener repair $160 to $440. Those are Cornerstone's 2026 prices across the DFW mid-cities, and you get a single firm number in writing before any work starts.
Can you come out the same day?
Usually, yes. Cornerstone is based in North Richland Hills and holds a slot open most afternoons for doors that are stuck shut or stranding a car inside, so same-day is realistic across NRH, Keller, Hurst, Bedford and Watauga. Call (817) 789-7039 and say what is happening, and we will tell you honestly whether today works or whether it is tomorrow morning.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door or should I replace it?
Repair is almost always the better value if the panels are straight and the door is under about 20 years old. Replacement starts making sense when panels are cracked or rusted through, when a discontinued section cannot be matched, or when you are stacking a third repair onto the same door in two years.
Do you charge a trip fee?
Quotes are free and the trip charge credits toward the job when you have us do the work. We are not going to nickel you for showing up.
